Compulsory Equipment List
All runners must carry the following items at all times. Each piece of gear is essential for your safety, navigation, and self-sufficiency in the remote environment of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans.
GPS Watch
Backpack with 3L Water
Phone
400 kcal Nutrition
Headlamp with Spare Batteries
Space Blanket
Whistle
Cup
Hat
Signal Mirror
BiB Number
GPS Watch
Used to track your distance, pace, and route — essential for navigation and monitoring your progress across vast, featureless terrain.
Backpack with 3L Water Capacity
Hydration is critical in the exposed pans. Your pack must be able to hold at least 3 liters of water (via bottles or bladder).
Phone
For emergency communication and race updates. Keep it sealed in a waterproof bag.
400 kcal Nutrition
Carry a minimum of 400 calories (gels, bars, or similar) to maintain energy between checkpoints.
Headlamp with Spare Batteries
Visibility is crucial before sunrise or after dark. Always carry a backup power source.
Space Blanket
Provides warmth and protection in case of injury, exhaustion, or unexpected weather changes. Its highly reflective surface also makes it easy to spot from a distance on the pans, helping rescuers locate you quickly if needed.
Whistle
Used to signal for help in emergencies when visibility or distance prevents shouting.
Cup
To be used at checkpoints for refilling fluids — supports the event’s no single-use plastic policy.
Hat
Essential for sun protection in extreme heat and open terrain.
Signal Mirror
Allows you to attract attention from rescue teams or distant runners during emergencies.
Race Bib Number
Must be worn and visible at all times for identification and tracking.
To tackle the harsh and unpredictable conditions of the salt pans, consider these recommended items in addition to the compulsory gear.
Proper preparation with these items will help you navigate the challenges of the Salt Pans Ultra with greater ease and confidence.
Recommended EQUIPMENT
Trail Running Shoes
Buff
Sunglasses
Sunblock
Gaiters
Running Poles
Lip Balm
Spare Socks
Vaseline and Blister Plaster
Sun Protection: Sunblock and sunglasses are strongly recommended. The bright, reflective surface of the pans can intensify sunburn and strain your eyes. Polarized sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen are the way to go.
Buff: The salt pans can experience strong winds that kick up sand or even lead to sandstorms. A buff protects your face and helps you breathe comfortably in these conditions.
Gaiters: Gaiters are vital to keep sand and debris out of your shoes, reducing discomfort and injury risk. Make sure they’re securely attached in advance.
Trail Running Shoes: Trail running shoes with good grip are crucial. The terrain varies from hard and crusty to sandy, and depending on the rainy season, you might encounter wet, muddy, or slippery sections. Proper shoes will significantly improve your performance and comfort.
Trekking Poles: Trekking poles can provide stability on muddy or uneven terrain. Whether you use them is a personal choice, so test them during training to decide if they work for you.
